THE RECEIPTS
August 7, 1993. Fugazi play a free show at the Sylvan Theater, on the grounds of the Washington Monument, for the 30th anniversary of the March on Washington. About 5,000 people turn up.
October 24, 2026. Turnstile, out of Baltimore, end their tour with a free benefit show in front of the Washington Monument. Organizers put the crowd at 60,000. The donations go to humanitarian relief in Palestine, Sudan and Lebanon.
Same monument. 33 years apart. Both free. Both for something.
THE X
Clubs marked an X on the hands of kids too young to be served. Straight edge, born in DC with Minor Threat's 1981 song, took the mark and kept it. HxC is the scene's shorthand for hardcore. The X on this shirt is drawn like the marker at the door.
